Horsehair Helmet Plume / Top Knot
My helmet is somewhat football shaped, which leaves a gap at the crown above my head. This allows me to have the post of the plume protrude into the helm. Do hot try this method with a spundome or round top helmet! You'll end up with the post in the top of your skull.

Its pretty simple actually, my helm was designed with a reinforced hole drilled into the top for a plume attachment.


- I got a package of Tandy horse hair, a short, short bolt and nut.
- I took a small clump of the horse hair and folded it in half, then used strapping tape to attach it to the bolt. This action was repeated until all the horse hair was taped to the bolt.
- I covered the strapping tape with fabric tape. I've tried to use leather to cover the tape, but I haven't been happy with the results. I'll try again when I get some really thin leather. When its attached to the helm, the bolt does not go all the way through the nut.
- Lastly, I took a piece of sole leather and put it on the top of the helmet padding for the nut to sit on (not needed, but gives me a warm fuzzy).

Avoid temptation to carry helm by plume.
